Things come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle

- Abraham Lincoln

There are people who think all they have to do is imagine something and it just happens. That visualization is the end all be all to bring something to fruition simply by envisioning & that's all. That by simply imagining it without no work being put into it riding on a magical mystical tour it (whatever you want) will plop into your lap because you thought it up.
As one who dreams unabashedly & freely with no plans to stop, (in fact one of my perennial favorite cartoons was "Bobby's World" that was out in the 70's and I pray is still airing somewhere). Bobby's World was of an adorable 4 year old on his Big Wheel bike who had an incredible imagination and live well with them. But the dreams existed in his world and parents had to step in many time for a reality check.
But if imagination was all it took, I would have been a overnight success. Well as Eddie Cantor, actor, once said: "It takes twenty years to be an overnight success"

Traveling with a women's empowerment conference for almost a decade and that was a common theme. I watch many women step out, did the work and were successful, there were others who did the work, had not done the visualization & were less successful (perhaps) and the ones who could not see it, avoided doing the work and you can imagine the end result.

But among the ones who were successful said that many times their success was far beyond what they could imagine! And those who's vision did not meet reality. Stuff happened.

Shucks if my vision had been on target I would have my MacArthur Fellow by now, been interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning and received my Kennedy Honor in the Arts.

And who's to say it may not happen at some point? But other things I had envision came to fruition, but let me tell you it was with a lot of hard work and sacrificing, a great sense of humor and a bucket full of tears.

In fact, I was watching the Kennedy Honors last night and the first segment was on Morgan Freeman, one of my favorite actors. Though he had started the business age age 9 he was 50, yes, 50 before he achieve his breaking movie "Driving Miss Daisy" and now at 71 years young, he is receiving this honor. He was no less talented at age 20, 30 or 40 and created an impressive body of work, but still he was 50 which is the kiss of death in an industry that worships the young to get his breakout movie. He could have stopped and threw in the towel early on but what a loss to us all if he had...

For one, I do believe in having vision and encourage people to think out of the box, to use or re-use their ability to imagine. Imagination is as necessary to life as is breathing.

It has kept me going many a day when especially when things seem bleak.

But I know I also have to put the work in and after it is all said in done post all of it, to let things work themselves out. Sometimes things working themselves out may take a direction you least expected to enjoy things way beyond anything you would have imagined.

"The Bible stated: Joseph dreamt another dream…Dream another dream. If one thing fails, try something else. Learn from your mistakes and try it again. So what if it got hard for a season, it will only be that way for a season". ~Tyler Perry

Dream a little dream of me...

Passion!

By Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney©95

Proudly struttin' in silver streaked slippers,
dazzling emeralds
with a verve....
energy illuminating the
Midnight sky.

Showering her gifts that whoops & shouts
Thrown about the heavens, her pungent scents.
Cinnamon, lemon of orange blossoms,
creamy magnolia held too long in the dark..

It seems..

An eternity

Inspiring...

Coming unannounced heralding with splendored golds & coppered grandeur...
With absolutely no delusions of what she will do.

The audacity!
Spilled heavy laden liquid jasmine, this lagniappe elle!

Imagine....

Walking accordingly with faith, things not beheld
and proceeding with haste, not wavering
Grasping her bounty...

Leap!

Big City Woman!
" Who are you?
Will you tarry awhile
or
will you take leave...quieter then you came?"

"No my sister, I am here, with you,
For you, and by you for as long as you need me to.

I am you.

Faith!

I will be called "Passion",
my name is (You fill in the blanks)
speak it carefully, speak of me well.
With all due respect....

Passion

"So much will come, while I am here.
I will tarry awhile to gather up the stars
And sprinkle this confection generously to
light up the way....
Until you are ready to take up the walk,
And talk your talk...

With silver streaked slippers illuminating a darkened sky

Then it is Done

There will always be people who will rise up when the going is tough. Some people have good intentions, others intended to do good… and then there are those who do it.~ Moon-ism
All rights reserved JHM©08
What a highly delightful and pleasurable thing it is when we follow an intention to completion. All of us at times have intended to do something, to do something good and then the moment passes, we get distracted by everyday things or we are really scared to step up and do it.
There is a price to be paid in the doing it..the recipient might not be receptive, we did not get the results we thought we should've gotten from it, dreams of grandeur turns out not to be so grand. We might be mocked, snickered at, not taken seriously and may even be vilified. Or for some the "worst" would be is that the doing may actually happen, just like we wanted or even beyond our wildest dreams!
And then where will we be? Happy? Satisfied? Live abundantly? Indescribable joy so awesome it almost hurt?
Or peace beyond measure because we did it...
I've been guilty of it even to the point of sabotaging my efforts to continue by dragging my heels, allowing distractions which can take many forms, but always familiar to get in the way of the doing it.
We've all have heard, said it "He/she "meant" well" but good intentions are just that intentions.
Intent:noun
the
purpose of something that is intended; that state of someone's mind at the time of an of a event.
Intention: noun
A
course of action that a person intends to follow.
It reminds me of the word "trying" that is used so frequently. I've used it, perhaps you too? But intending or trying seems a nice way of getting out what one should be doing but looking for a way out of stepping up, but without losing face.
So here we are; another year has gone by and have you gone back to look at what you tried to do, intended to do and did it? I am happy to say and some of it to my surprise that I actually got out of the way of myself and did it! There no way it was easy in the process, infact there were some downright scary "oh no what had I gon' & did" moments. And others I was so ready to walk away and crawl up in the bed frozen & locked, but I did do it and saw it though I cannot say to the end, because the end has not happened yet.
Making the decisions was impelling, it was like I was compelled to go ahead by inner needs that had to be met.
So what will it be for you? Stay with good intentions ..
Or intend and then do.
See what is out there at the end and then butterflies will be free!
How cool is that?

Viva la Difference!

So people can tell the difference between Zydeco and Cajun I've included very short videos below. You can easily tell the difference. People want to do too much blending or assimilating when both can be enjoyed as they are indeed 1st cousins musically and are routinely played interchangeably at events. People from outside Louisiana routinely use swing dancing to this music. Simply enjoy and les bon temp rouler Aie!

Authentic Cajun Music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egNCukv6pqQ&feature=related Cajun Music Roots http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkv0oStQE4I&NR=1

And Cajun dance (high level) These are very very short films. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JAebhI5yMw&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es6AiyEWAnw&feature=related Roots (I just wonder why she's barefoot and he's not)

Now this is zydeco music with Buckwheat Zydeco ,the late Rockin' Dopsie & Clifton Chenier. (You can see how this is the grandaddy of Blues, R& B etc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQdPr7MQdBQ&feature=related Note here 2 of the Neville Brothers sitting in with Buckwheat!

For those who do not know the difference Zydeco a North African word translated as "snapbean" orgins are African. The grandfather of R&B, Blues & Soul. Zydeco was the music of African enslaved people who while not permitted to play music of Africa at the risk of death, took Cajun music and mixed it with African rhythms

It's Cajun music with soul & rhythm. There is a call & response between instruments.

Cajun music is indigenous to Cajun people who are the descendent from those who migrated here from Nova Scotia, Canada, originally exiled from France for religious beliefs.

The two musical forms are often interchanged many with creolized words from Africa & from France.

“Some people are carbon copies. Others make their own impression”~Unknown

One thing I am learning is, while a work in progress, is to live fearlessly. And there are times when you do that that people will misjudge you, snipe, criticize while hiding behind a touchy feely but nonetheless dig. Not here, I have not seen that, but just in general people miguidely or erronously, misjudge whaen you engage your life more fully

When one ventures to speak the truth or speak with candor and conviction the hearer or the reader at times will have their own sense of your words which may have nothing to do with you, but a whole lot to do with them. Disagreeing is quite common and even more common is the nice nasty way people who may not have the gumption, the chutzpah, the "noive" to say to you "I do not agree"!

It won't hurt (much) if one does! How much freedom we could gain if people showed candor, with a dash of diplomacy & sincerity? Who would want someone around them all the time who agrees constantly? How valid would their words be to you after awhile if they never ever see anything (in their eyes) that may not be in harmony with their values or sensibilities?

Be mindful I am not talking about shock value... We see too much of that today as it is, as well as cruelty. But it is not cruel to be fair minded to be a reflecting mirror for a friend as they sort out things. There are times when I do not like what my friends tell me, but when I am quiet and alone and thinking about it, I can indeed see the truth of what they are are saying. And with that it deepened my friendship and caring for them because I know that what else may happen they will be fearless and truthful with me.

Encouragement can come in many forms and if you have any regard for the people in your life there are those times when you are indeed granting one of the best gifts and that is of being truthful. Or of being fearless enough to stand up for them.

Even if it is to them about them, or you.

Today I learned of someone I knew for a few years whose very young life was cut short from brain cancer. A lovely woman with an adoring husband who fought fearlessly to have a quality of life despite having to deal with this illness though for awhile it appeared that things were improving. After surgery a few years ago, the cancer went into remission only to reappear this year.

She fell asleep peacefully in her sleep with her husband next to her. All through her illness and even before that she was highly regarded, a tender, caring, funny woman with large beautiful eyes. But the characteristic of hers I really admire was her candor, her truthfulness and her fearlessness. Don't ask her the question if you did not want an answer!

As many have mourned her passing, I wish to honor her by being as fearless as I want to be... To speak truth to the best I am able even if or when ones want to in veiled misdirected comments to others because they do not like what you said. Sometime operating like that in sniping backfires the sniper coming across as being a tad self-righteous, as if they assume their way is the only way to encourage.

There is no right or wrong answers in this. Many will find their own way to do what they need to do that is what makes this world so fascinating to live in. We are all grown folks going about grown up business, I hope, and will have to have ownership to whatever we need to do to make a way in this world. As I am closing out some places where I no longer want to be it is all the more incumbent that I do this fearlessly. To not second guess the rightness of what I know in my heart to do. I allowed doubt and second guessing decisions to continue in places where I am no longer at. But now it will not happen again.

Now is the time...

Another wise friend said to me "use what you can (in her words) if you want & toss the rest out". I think that is smart way to think, so I offer it to you:

Use what you can (in my words) if you want & toss the rest out.

How do you show your individuality?

This is how I express myself "Up in the Clouds" All Rights reservedJHM©08

Some people are carbon copies. Others make their own impression

Voices screaming for originality surround us in today's culture. Problem is, most originality is happening just on the surface level, and is usually not original at all. People are so "original" now that tattoos--once symbols of rebellion and individual freedom--are now a tool of conformity. Sometimes, you can adopt someone else's value system without knowing it. When that happens, you dilute the one thing you have complete control over: your unique self. People who are truly individuals are ones who are true to themselves. They are self-made people, not composites of borrowed personalities and values. They created their own value system and gain strength by living within that system. These are the people who do more than shock; they leave long-lasting impressions.

Looking up

One person working toward a dream is worth 99 people just working.
- Lani Kraus, writer

The power of having a dream and a vision

We've all worked with people who just show up to fill space. Uninspired and stuck going through the motions, they pick up a paycheck on Monday and wait for Friday. Some are just killing time until retirement. Maybe you even find yourself in this mindset. Not a very satisfying way to spend your days is it? Sounds like an easy life--except that in life, retirement can be permanent and unexpected. In your life, are you actively heading straight for your goals, or are you puttering around vaguely? Nothing is wrong with hard work; determination and elbow grease are what make the best dreams possible. But it's interesting that most work makes us look downward, while dreams lift our eyes to the sky. While you're keeping that nose to the grindstone, make sure you keep your head up to see where you're going.

Oh Yes She Did! The Hope of a New Day

"To Be Swimming with the Fishes" quilt and Miz Cookie

"The Hope of the New Day Begun" quilt of the artist Ms Torreah "Cookie" Washington of South Carolina was selected to create a studio art quilt for the exhibition:

“Quilts for Obama: Celebrating the Inauguration of our 44th President” is being presented by The Group for Cultural Documentation, Inc., in collaboration with the Historical Society of Washington, DC.

It will open on January 11, 2009 and run through January 31, 2009. The opening reception will be Sunday afternoon, January 11, 2009, at 2:00 PM.

The exhibit is in the Small-Alper Gallery, at the top of the stairway on the second Floor. The address of the Historical Society is: The Historical Society of Washington, D.C.801 K Street, NW at Mount Vernon Square Washington DC 20001

The Historical Society is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 am – 5:00 PM.

Roland Freeman, curator of "Quilts for Obama: Celebrating the Inauguration of our 44th President" is founder of The Group for Cultural Documentation and a long time advocate for African American quilters and their work. Many may remember his ground breaking book on African American quilters "Communion of the Spirits" and he is a 2007 National Endowment For the Arts' National Heritage Fellows.

Mr Freeman, also received the 2007 Bess Lomax Hawes Award.
Ms Washington's work has been seen in exhibits around the country this year.

In Cookie's own words the description on the quilt: "The label is in the lower back of the quilt. It is 5' X 7" Beloved friend Elayna painted the picture and I scanned it in to the computer, created the text and printed it on fabric paper. What you can't see in these photos is the letter beads that go around the small black circle. I sewed the word "HOPE" in 30 different languages. I am really pleased with the end result".

And a most excellent well done to Edna J.Patterson Petty also selected... See articleCheck out this wonderful article about Edna and her work. http://www.bnd.com/news/local/story/575997.html

C'mon, let Me Show you Were it's At~A Vision Statement

"Mo' Sax" Art by Maurice Evans Check him out: athttp://www.blackartdepot.com/mauriceevans.htm

Today was a better day for me then I thought because at midnight last night I figured out something and put in to action. In part from out of the blue I got a phone call from someone on the East Coast calling me 3 am her time to talk. In the course of the conversation & her allowing me to talk out loud aided me in putting somethings in perspective that left to my own devices I would have suffered needlessly giving something far more energy then warranted.

And in talking it out loud and talking it through I clearly and relatively easily saw the answer for myself. And thus so being able to continue making my plan and making my plan work.

I will continue to do so until there is no more breath. But aim & purpose is to go beyond( which I am there I believe) now to métamorphose(transformation) I think a more active part of dreaming. As with many of us had to grow through a lot of stuff to get to that point.

I love how metamorphosis is spelled in French: métamorphose... In fact I am having it done in wall words and putting it right above my bed so I can see it every morning so I can stride into my day and into my world!

Yesterday I had something occur that was a little disappointing and I have to admit was a little hurtful. But what I was happy with was that I did not amplify it into something more then what it was. it was no more then business as usual with some who decide that I am invisible and whether I was worthwhile to pay attention to and making a decision that potentially and on a small scale changes something that I had just put in place. While I had not yet invested much in my plan, this decision basically force me to dismantle and rewrite. All based on an assumption someeone made and who had not bothered to talk to me before making that decision!

What I finally was able to put into perspective was knowing we live in a microwaved society, IM's, texting that people have been reduced to communicating in hyper-shortened "conversation. When in an emergency I could see the relevance, but now its been moved to a whole other thing jumping to very quick assumptions and making decisions that can affect someone's life that could in some cases be disastrous. And even more of a cocern is insisting the assumption is correct even when brought to your attention that it is incorrect...

Why is it that people are afraid to have real communication? And is it really important and critical that people have shortened interacting with other people. What are we afraid of? Are we that paranoid? Or we that hurt/disappointed/ an inability to share ourselves with others? It would be easy and I do think there is some validity to it that the meaness that has accelrated in "reality TV, the instant mocking of people failings, fragility, not so shining moments that people have made careers (and lots of money to boot) in a global world may have a sharing in all of this. And viewers take seeminly a delight though publicly most will deny they watch these modern day watching of gladiators/Christian martyrs being torn apart by lions in the Colisieum as entertainment like in ancient Rome.

I went off on this , but let me go back to my small example. While I was in my taking an assertive stand yesterday & while whatever decision was made for me, I unmade the decison by

1. not accepting the decision

2. informed them what action I will take.

Though the end results was the same, it was for entirely different reasons and I was proactive. There was nothing in all of this about defiance as I had not given anyone permission to make a decision for me, it was just again assumed. In fact I would suspect that there was no paying of attention to me doing this which would have been the status quo, but it wasn't being made for them. It was being made for me.

Neither was in my thinking was I asking permission or approval because there was no reason to do that, but also by not allowing myself to be unduly down about something that once upon a time would have been some great angst for me. People write their own scripts for their own plays all the time. In this case, as in others, they failed to inform me that I had to audition for the role or if I wanted to be in their play.

At then end of the day I want to be consious myself about assuming things about or for other people and if for a moment some stops and thinks before they be presumptious to do so for another to check and see if the other person wants it will help greatly.

That is what I am talking about in growing in the métamorphose .

And I like it like that...

“If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.” by Yogi Berra

WOW – I have really had a great week.

It all started last Friday, November 2nd, with the “If Jazz Was a Color” exhibition of jazz quilted textile collages by Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney in the Changing Gallery at the American Jazz Museum. Along with the visual treat of Jacquelyn’s work was the audio treat of hearing her recite her original poetry and the music provided by Dennis Winslett on sax, John Brewer on keyboard, Tyrone Clark on bass and drummer Brandon Draper. All of this accompanied by a tasty table of hors d’oeuvres. The exhibit runs through January 6th , so get down to 18th & Vine and catch it – oh, the art works are for sale and Jacquelyn has volunteered to donate a portion of her proceeds to the American Jazz Museum.

Emotional Hijacking
Most people will be familiar with the term, “Engage brain before opening mouth.”
The phrase refers to those times when we respond instantly and at an emotional level to some outside stimulus without logically and consciously thinking about it first. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of such an outburst perhaps you have been surprised at the intensity of the response, and if you’ve ever done it yourself you may have felt shameful and apologetic once you’ve had a chance to think about the situation properly.

According to Emotional Intelligence theory, such a reaction is called “Emotional Hijacking”, and is explained by the fact that the emotional part of our brain, and the logical part act quite independently of each other, and at different speeds.

Be who you are

To be nobody but yourself--in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else-- means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.

- EE Cummings, poet

Take a look at your priorities and your goals. Where did they come from? Are they the products of soul-searching, self-analysis, and careful planning? Or are they a reaction to pressures from other people? Did you find them within yourself or within the pages of a magazine? The answers to these questions are important because they tell you if the person you're becoming is someone you want to be. Here's another way to look at a goal: do you want it, or do you just think you should want it? It's not easy to follow your own direction in life. But it's more possible than you may think. Question everything. Every priority in your life needs to justify why it's there. If you can't come up with a good reason that actually comes from YOU, maybe it doesn't belong.

Vision~Do you know where you're going?

The future belongs to those who prepare for it today~ Malcolm X,

Who tries to put together a puzzle without seeing a picture of the finished product? Who shoots an arrow without knowing exactly where they want it to hit? Your goals--particularly your health and family goals--are likely more important to you than puzzles and archery. So why trust them to luck or a fuzzy idea of what success is? If you can clearly state and see what your vision is, you're well on your way to seeing it come to life. From the beginning, world leaders with a strong, clear vision have been able to energize people with the possibility of greatness. In the same way, a vision can motivate you and keep you fired up. Instead of stumbling around, hoping to reach your goals, you'll know success when you see it, and know what needs to be done to get there. The clearer your vision, the more targeted your plan will be. What do you see?

Thank you Sparks People...

Vision~Do you see possibilities or problems?

A (wo)man who wants something will find a way; a (w0)man who doesn't will find an excuse.

- Stephen Dolley Jr.

It's been said that some of the smartest people around would make lousy entrepreneurs. How can that be? The fact is, some people are so smart they can easily see all of the problems, roadblocks, and snafus that they'll need to overcome to succeed. They can think of all kinds of reasons why their idea won't work. This knowledge can overwhelm any thoughts of possibilities or dreams. When you think of your goals, do you focus on the positives of making it happen, or the negatives of potential barriers? To reach your goals, you gotta really want them. More importantly, you gotta really believe that you can do it. Think more about why you CAN make it happen instead of why you can't. No more excuses.
