Quilting continues! We're excited to have more time to work on creations that will hang, not only at Ashé, but also at the Galerie 1501, a pop up gallery located at 1501 Canal Street . How's that for motivation?   The focus in the name change with the classes becoming part of the Ashe's regular lineup is on Lydia, Biblical figure, who was a seller of purple clothShe was very hospitable Christian woman, entrepernurial, creative, quite prosperous, and a visionary. She sold her wares  to the rulers of her time, the clergy and the wealthy.

 

 

The color purple, in ancient times, was and still is a difficult process to produce.  Having that skill allowed Lydia to provide not only for herself sn d her household, but the community around her.  That is why the renaming of the class as such is appropiate.

 

 

The talented quilting class participants are still creating incredible pieces. Bring your imagination and join in the fun for a series of quilting workshops led by visual poet artist Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney. These workshops will provide participants with opportunities to incorporate their own compelling personal stories as they produce vibrant, jazzy, contemporary, quilted textile collages. Finished quilts will be formally exhibited at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center opening March 3-April April 24,2015 entitled "Standing in the Shadows (no more)". 

 

 

 It will also have a second component at the  Galerie  1501 on Canal Street located in the historic Texaco building.  That exhibition entitled "Lydia's 1st Purple Moon: A Seasoned HeART is located at 1501 Canal Street from March 10-May 10,2015...

  No sewing experience necessary.Every couple of months there will be a specific theme.  For February & March, it will be: "And the Lioness Spoke".  March is Women's History Month & April is National Quilts and National Poetry Month.

"Standing in the Shadows (No More)" is a series of narrative quilting workshops led by visual poet artist Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney.  These workshops will provide participants with opportunities to incorporate their own compelling personal stories as they create vibrant, jazzy, contemporary, quilted textile collages. During the workshops, an eclectic group of storytellers, poets, speakers, etc. will be engaged as part of the soul experience.

Finished quilts will be formally exhibited at Ashé Cultural Arts Center from March 3-April 30, 2015. "Standing in the Shadows" will then embark on a national & international tour in the fall of 2015 with its 2nd "thread" in Montpellier, France. This is not "just" a quilting class. Those interested do not need any sewing experience. Just by simply being willing to Cover Your HeART so Your Soul will be warmed while discovering millenniums-old tradition done in a contemporary vibe.  Be sure bring a pair of fabric scissors, and if you desire, fabrics you can share at this communal event.

A wonderful singer,Ilene Martinez, an Austin singer residing in France as an expat, sent me this to me on Facebook last night.

She remembered my sharing this quote of Dr. Angelou of whom I quote often right along with Dr.  Johnnetta Cole, George Fraser & Oprah...

People who know me well are fully aware that I save quotes and use them in my life.

I just thought when I saw Ilene had done this was how one thing said can ripple out & influence yet another ...and another...and another.

Who’s been there more then on time?

In a scene where she be on familiar terms with stuff…

And stuffed people who distinguish themselves with nothing other then

Bits & pieces

(It is not yet their time yet)…

But knows experiences trumps assumptions

And one does not know

But knows...

When it is time to say yeah...

I am taking a break this minute from doing & pushing, knocking on doors literally & figuratively.
And for whatever reason why, the song from the Broadway and the movie rendition of Dreamgirls popped in my head.


That determination, angst, anger clear, single-minded ferociousness so wonderfully done by both Jennifer Holiday (the original Effie) and Jennifer Hudson (movie version of Effie) said it all for me.


There's a point when you simply have to have that gut bucket hand on the hip un-huh yeah girl  soulfull-ness with no shame or concern for how anyone or anything view it. Or what they are doing.  It just need to be said or done.
