Get Another Dream if You Must: Just Don't Stop Dreaming!

I just discovered this blog from Tyler Perry in 2008.  It bore repeating and very timely for me.

I’ve been reading a lot of messages on the message board about how the
opening of the studio affected you. Some of them brought tears to my eyes,
and what has stayed on my mind is that so many of us have stopped
dreaming. Listen to me, having no vision is death to your spirit. Why stop
dreaming, because one of them didn’t come true when you thought it
should? Why stop now? You’ve come so far. Listen to me, when I started
building this studio I wasn’t thinking about being the first black person
to do it. I wasn’t thinking about how many acres it is. I wasn’t thinking
about what it would feel like to own it. I was just following a dream. I
am no different from you. If you can make your mind line up with your
spirit man, and your dreams, then your dreams will become your reality. It
has to. It has no choice.

Now hear me here for a moment, if you will. I know that a lot of different
kinds of people from a lot of different backgrounds and faiths read this
email, but I want to share something with you, if you’ll indulge me for a
second. One of my favorite stories in the bible is of Joseph. Joseph had a
dream and his brothers wanted to kill him for dreaming. Sometimes when you
dream you will go through all kinds of hell to see it come to pass. I used
to tell people that I thought I could do plays and movies, and when I
would tell them they would get mad at me, talk about me and eventually try
to discourage me.

When I started to do plays in the beginning things started to fall apart
and these same people would laugh and say things like see, "I knew you
couldn’t do it." Where am I going with all of this you ask? Well right
now
in these times in our country there are lots of you who are wondering how
you’re going to pay the mortgage or the rent, or feed your families. And
there are lots of you who have lost your houses and jobs and the very same
people that brought over the house warming gifts are laughing at you
now. I have been there. I UNDERSTAND THE HURT, but I’m here to tell you
don’t let it get you down. You know what you say to
them? "SSSOOOOO!!!"

I admire and respect people so much that have a dream and go for it. Don’t ever lose that GO FOR IT attitude because you will see your dreams come true as long as you don’t operate in fear. After you’ve done all to stand, stand some more. So what happens when you had this big dream and it seems to be falling apart? You seem to be losing it…what do you do? I look to this story of Joseph, and you really should read this bible story. It’s fascinating. It is so parallel to what is going on right now in this country. But this is what happened. When his dream seemed to be falling apart he did something awesome. The bible says Joseph dreamed another dream, and that is what I wanted to talk to you about today.

 Dream another dream.

If one thing fails, try something else. Learn from your mistakes and try it again. So what if it got hard for a season, it will only be that way for a season. I cannot even begin to tell you all the times I failed, but every failure in your life will bring your dream closer to you. I know that sounds crazy but it’s so true. It’s okay to fail, now get up and keep dreaming. Don’t stop dreaming because you may have lost something. When I was doing plays for the first time, my dream was that 1,200 people would come and sell the place out. Only 30 people came. It crushed me. But I didn’t stop. I kept dreaming. I believed and dreamed all the way down to living in my car. But I kept dreaming, and when I was at my lowest I would talk to God. Sometimes all I could get out of my mouth was "Jesus help me," but that was a prayer I prayed a lot. And you know what else I did? I got out and encouraged myself. When I was homeless and sleeping in my car I would hustle up enough gas money and drive down to the nicest neighborhood in Atlanta where there were beautiful homes and I would dream and say "one day." On Sundays, I would go to open houses. I would go to the dealerships and test drive whatever kind of car I thought I wanted. Now I know these are material things but you would be surprised as to what it would do to help you see that all things in your dreams are possible. It’s hard to see a dream come to pass, but if you believe, it has no choice. Everywhere you look you see all of this talk about the economy and gloom and doom. Turn that mess off. Stop letting that get into your spirit. Tune it out, watch things that will encourage you. Listen to things that will uplift you. Now this part is to a certain group of people, not to everyone.

This is for the people who have been feeling like they are being led by God to do something in these economic times that most people will think is crazy. The ones who may not have a dime but are feeling like something great is about to break free in their lives. You are so right if this is what you’re feeling. I have a suggestion if you’ll take my humble advice.

HAVE NO FEAR!

ONLY BELIEVE!

Give thanks for where you are. I know that may be hard to do, but there is a liberty in being thankful. And lastly, give, give, give. The reason I’ve fed thousands of families, paid rent and taxes for the elderly, dug wells in Africa and helped establish churches and built homes for poor families is because I know the power of giving. You reap what you sew. If you want favor from God, sew it into someone else.

God bless you and know that this too shall pass, and you will be so much better when it does. Tyler Perry

And the Lioness Spoke...

Lydia's Purple Cloth Quilting Community: And The Lioness Spoke
Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney

(Each Tuesday) | 6:00-8:00 p.m.
NO CLASS February 17, 2015 - Mardi Gras
Ashé Cultural Arts Center | 1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., NOLA
Free and open to the public

Quilting continues! We're excited to have more time to work on creations that will hang, not only at Ashé, but also at the Galerie 1501, a pop up gallery located at 1501 Canal Street . How's that for motivation?   The focus in the name change with the classes becoming part of the Ashe's regular lineup is on Lydia, Biblical figure, who was a seller of purple clothShe was very hospitable Christian woman, entrepernurial, creative, quite prosperous, and a visionary. She sold her wares  to the rulers of her time, the clergy and the wealthy.

The color purple, in ancient times, was and still is a difficult process to produce.  Having that skill allowed Lydia to provide not only for herself sn d her household, but the community around her.  That is why the renaming of the class as such is appropiate.

The talented quilting class participants are still creating incredible pieces. Bring your imagination and join in the fun for a series of quilting workshops led by visual poet artist Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney. These workshops will provide participants with opportunities to incorporate their own compelling personal stories as they produce vibrant, jazzy, contemporary, quilted textile collages. Finished quilts will be formally exhibited at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center opening March 3-April April 24,2015 entitled "Standing in the Shadows (no more)".

It will also have a second component at the  Galerie  1501 on Canal Street located in the historic Texaco building.  That exhibition entitled "Lydia's 1st Purple Moon: A Seasoned HeART is located at 1501 Canal Street from March 10-May 10,2015...

Sitting under my Own Fig Tree...My DIY not dreaming any longer!

As of Thursday, December 27th, 2012 a nightmare ends and a new chapter begins when I get to move into an apartment.  My own fig tree...end a rough time that did not break me.  While not a fan of apartments & this is really pretty decent, it stops a decline, my roller skates so to speak of a slippery slope.

Most of my home belongings are gone, most damaged after Hurricane Issac.  It shouldn't had happened; the storm directly did not do it. It did indeed come about by black mold, but the responsible entity, was the negligence on the part of the (at that time) the property managers and owners.

Right now, I do not want to give them the energy or time as right now it is more about celebration!

The phrase" fig tree" I've used a lot to symbolize having one's on abode.  Everyone, everything deserves shelter & dignity no matter what anyone say or do.

"Fig Tree is significant to me as I've been without a home for awhile It is also important to me from Micah 4:4 (different translations shown):

New International Version (©1984)
"Every man will sit under his own vine and under his own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the LORD Almighty has spoken".

New Living Translation (©2007)
"Everyone will live in peace and prosperity, enjoying their own grapevines and fig trees, for there will be nothing to fear. The LORD of Heaven's Armies has made this promise!

English Standard Version (©2001)
"but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken".

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
"Each of them will sit under his vine And under his fig tree, With no one to make them afraid, For the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken".

And shown at Isaiah 65:21-22:."They will build houses and dwell in them;they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit. No longer will they build houses and others live in them,or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so will be the days of my people";

It will be simple, for the time being, my new fig tree, but well presented.  I have other furniture, but I cannot afford to nor can I afford not to, bring the remaining of my belongings here from North Carolina. Getting them here will make a huge, quantum leap into my life being settled & my being able to provide for myself.

But for now, I will manage. There's always a way even out of no way!
I have to replace things now that I lost, so I've been looking around for things that are affordable, durable and appealing. There are several designs from West Elm I love. And I really love the idea of monogramming...and using words on it significant.

Yes they are only towels, the words matter more that I want to be a reminder for me. These are from www.westelm.com

My favorites are "Fig Tree" & "Paradise"...

My favorite shower curtain also from West Elm "Butterfly" we know butterflies represent metamorphosis, transformation

While this is not my rugs I lost in Hurricane Issac, I like this design as I rebuild... (at least in my head) also from West Elm:

This chair of which there are 3, I got from a neighbor that was rusting in the yard. My plan originally was to sand, paint & used them in my garden.  This was before I started "wandering in the wilderness" May 25th,2012.  A friend stored them in their yard. Now this week, Friday to be exact, I will be using them in my new apartment for dining room chairs. They still need sanding & painting and I still have to make the cushions, but they will now be done.

Tommorrow is the beginning of reconstruction, of a new time.  Its rather appropiate, don't you think, that it starts at the close of one year, that I do not want to repeat & the beginning of a fresh new one that lies wide open waiting for me to put my print on, my design, my hope, my peace.   I am not looking for my old life, that ship has sailed, that bell has rung.  But I will have my new life that will begin. Tomorrow.

Rippling... Never Underestimate how your Life Affects Others

Never underestimate how things will ripple out.  My dearest friend Karen's still continues to affect others in the most possible way.  We celebrate & cherish what we had, still have.  Another poet shared this with me this morning in her honoring Karen's memory...

For My Friend (In Memory of Karen Hurst: Friend to Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney)

By Dana L. Veach ©11

The creamy silk of lilies,
Gardenia’s spiced perfume

Are only pale reminders
Of the rareness of her bloom.

She gave through tears and laughter,
The vibrancy of life.
The world is darker, rougher now
Since she passed from my sight.

The air, how stale without her;
The light, how dim it’s grown.
My friend who shared a lifetime,
Before me, home has flown.

How can I share the wonder
Of knowing such a friend?
What she meant requires that self
and grief come to their end.

I’ll carry on in honor.
She’d want no less for me.
As fiercely as she filled my life,
Let me now live so free.

When she watches me from Heaven
May she cheer to watch me try,
With the strength she left, seize life-like her,
And milk its fullness dry.

Even The Sun Shed Tears: Karen Hurst Johnson 1952-2011

Even the Sun Shed Tears
 Karen Hurst Johnson

Karen fell asleep in death last night... She was a woman of somekind!

My heart goes out to her family...Isaiah 65-17-23.

Who will be my best friend now?

I can't breathe right now...

"And He will wipe every tear from their eyes & death will be no more, neither mourning nor outcry nor pain be any more. The former things will have passed away". Rev 21:3-4.

What a blessing is my friend...

In Memory of Karen Hurst Johnson

What a blessing is my friend!

Who listens to you...

And loves you...
Through thick and thin.
That patiently waits for you
As you go along through murky waters.
Angst, trials and trivails.

That sees your world...

Though enchanted eyes and marvel.
Such delight in such a friend!
Does such a one comes oft?
Not..
But when they do,
it can cleanse eons of desolation.

Friends like Karen...

Who themselves so cool.
From far away ...
And in the neighborhood.
Stretching her love...
To those who are out.
Not part of the in crowd
These who are not.
Just makes you want to shout!

The ones who are forgotten

Or no one who desires...
To know their hearts replete.
But Karen works through the mire...
And sees the jewel complete.
Simple and unpretentious...
She has no guile.
But deep, deep pools of wisdom.
And an amazing capacity to make one smile.
Despite all your sorrow.

What a blessing is my friend.

Who loves you through thick and thin.
My heartelt prayer to my God...
For permitting me
To see.
What is to be.

And what she gives...

Without question..
Without ridicule...
Without the requisite resume...
And background check...
That far too many demand.
Before love is given...
By command.

There is no pretense...

Flawed jewel that she is.
She is my friend ...
To the end.
And she sends...
Her love to you.

Gardenias and Lilies For Karen

By Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney ©11

I have gardenias and lilies to enfold you…

And relish in fragrant clouds girdling us.
More composed then an early morn…
In the temples of Tunisia.
Or the cooling caverns of Carlsbad.
And more vivid then the complexions of Santiago…

Kuba…

At the zenith of Zaire.
So are my memories of that tempo…
While we were still at once…
My mind’s eye wanders and receives…
The heart expanse follows my North Star.
My yearning strains…
O Wandering Moon!
Splendid, glorious orbs emanating a sumptuous blaze!
On a backdrop…
So deep and rich.

While I desire to be…

I forget not.
Those twenty years of nights…
Of thine to me.
I kneel in Rosas Blanca…
Amidst a silky canopy.
Intertwined redolent reflections of gladness…
And long ago sadness.
To know my sorrow is to declare…
Missing you,
Missing you…
Missing you.
The flowers would weep…
Indeed!

For the life I threw away was one I needed to.

But not you…
Never you.

As my sojourn reconvenes…

I’ll take shards of you with me.
And leave crystal fragments of me behind.
O cultivates the fruits of your yearnings.
Placing the harvest in an urn…
Marking it Graceful Manners.
Please do recall in a special vase…
Having encased recollected musings.
Keeping it safe with supremeness…
And leniency…
In a vial of gardenias and lilies…
That will forever more,
Always reside with you.
